Winter Tire Regulations Return to B.C. Highways Oct. 1

Every year, Oct. 1 signals the beginning of winter tire requirements across B.C. These rules remain in effect until April 30, except for certain routes without heavy snow or mountain passes, which wrap up earlier on March 31.

Where You’ll Need Winter Tires

Highways in the North and Interior are included, along with South Coast stretches such as the Sea to Sky. On Vancouver Island, the Malahat, Highway 4, Highway 14, and Highway 28 are also covered. The Lower Mainland and southeastern Vancouver Island are exempt from mandatory use, but unpredictable conditions make having winter tires a wise precaution.

What Counts as an Approved Tire

To comply with provincial law, tires must display either the M+S marking (mud and snow) or the mountain and snowflake symbol. Tread depth must measure at least 3.5 millimetres. Drivers without the proper setup could face a $121 fine, a cost easily avoided with preparation.

Chains and Heavy Vehicles

Commercial drivers also have responsibilities beginning Oct. 1. Most are required to carry chains on designated routes, with roadside signs explaining when to use them. Chains are not required on the Lower Mainland or most of Vancouver Island, but they remain essential for safe travel in snow-prone areas.
